The Court of King Biàn Chéng is situated at the bottom of the great Ocean, |
卞城王,掌理大海之底,

due north of the Wòjiāo rock. It is a vast, noisy Hell, |
正北方沃燋石下的大叫唤大地狱。

eight thousand miles in extent, |

1. The Dungeon Where People Kneel for Long Periods on Iron Shot. |

1. Those who find fault with the wind and curse the thunder, who like only fine weather and loath rain; |

Yuàn tiān yóu dì; tǎoyàn fēng, zhòumà léi, xǐhuan qíng, yànwù yǔ. 怨天尤地;討厭風,咒駡雷,喜歡晴,厭惡雨。 |
2. those who let their tears fall towards the north [towards the magistrate]; |
对着北方(天空)大小便,哭泣。

3. those who steal treasures from the inside temple statues |
偷窃神佛装塑法身时内藏的宝物。

4. or scrape the gilding from the outside of images; |

5. those who take holy names in vain, |
随便乱呼叫神佛的名讳、圣号。

6. those who show no respect for written paper or scriptures; |
不尊敬、爱惜有字之纸、与经书。

7. those who throw down or pile up dirt and rubbish near pagodas or temples; |
寺庙、道观、宝塔的前后,泼洒、堆积污秽的东西。

8. those who use dirty cookhouses and stoves for preparing the sacrificial meats |

or who do not abstain from eating the flesh of oxen (who plow fields) and dogs (who guard houses) and frogs, |
尤其吃牛肉、狗肉、青蛙,

which especially must not be used in sacrifices. |
对佛、神、更是大不敬。

9. those who have in their possession blasphemous or obscene books or magazines; |
家中保存、收藏违背正理的书, 或黄色书刊。

10. those who burn or tear up books or pamphlets or other things which urge people to be good; |

11. those who carve or sketch sacred images, |
雕刻、图绘神圣的图象,

such as the symbol of the origin of a things, the Sun and Moon, the Big Dipper, |
例如太极图、日月、七星、
lìrú Tàijí tú, Rìyuè, Qīxīng, 例如太極圖、日月、七星、 |
the two immortals named Hé, the Royal Mother, the God of Longevity |
和合二圣、王母、寿星,
Héhé èr shèng, Wángmǔ, Shòuxing, 和合二聖、王母、壽星, |
or any of the great immortals, or the buddhas of the three realms, |
所有的上仙,三世诸佛的形相,
suǒyǒu de Shàngxiān, sānshì zhū fó de xíngxiàng, 所有的上仙,三世諸佛的形相, |
or the holy swastika, or similar symbols |
或卍字花样等,
huò wàn zì huāyàng děng, 或卍字花樣等, |
and then wear them on clothing or use them on household utensils; |
在一切衣服、器具上。
zài yīqiè yīfu, qìjù shàng. 在一切衣服、器具上。 |
12. those who embroider clothes with imperial the dragon and phoenix; |
在衣裙上绣上龙凤的图像。

13. those who waste grain; |
浪费、糟蹋五谷。
làngfèi, zāota wǔgǔ. 浪費、糟蹋五穀。 |
14. those who who buy up grain to sell when the price is exorbitantly high |
囤积米粮,期待卖高价钱。
dùn jī mǐliáng, qīdài mài gāo jià qián. 囤積米糧,期待賣高價錢。 |
—all these shall be thrust into the great and noisy Hell, |
犯以上的罪事,都发入大叫唤大地狱。
fàn yǐshàng de zuì shì, dōu fā rù dàjiào huàn dàdì yù. 犯以上的罪事,都發入大叫喚大地獄。 |
where they will be examined as to their misdeeds and passed accordingly into one of the sixteen dungeons for torture. |
再查出所犯的事件性质,分发至小地狱受苦刑。
zài cháchū suǒ fàn de shìjiàn xìngzhì, fēnfā zhì xiǎo dìyù shòukǔ xíng. 再查出所犯的事件性質,分發至小地獄受苦刑。 |
And then, at the expiration of their time, they will be sent on to the Seventh Court to see if they have further crimes for treatment there. |

All dwellers still in the human world who, on the 8th day of the 3rd moon, |
世间的人,能在三月初八日,
Shìjiān de rén, néng zài sān yuè chū bā rì, 世間的人,能在三月初八日, |
maintain a vegetarian fast and remain pure in body, speech, and thought, and who register a vow from that date to sin this way no more, |
茹素、持戒,清净身口意,发誓立愿;今后不敢再犯以上的诸罪,
rúsù, chíjiè, qīngjìng shēn kǒu yì, fāshì lìyuàn; jīnhòu bùgǎn zàifàn yǐshàng de zhū zuì, 茹素、持戒,清淨身口意,發誓立願;今後不敢再犯以上的諸罪, |
and, on the 14th, 15th, and 16th of every 5th moon, and the l0th of the 10th moon, to practice abstinence, |
并且能够每逢五月十四、十五、十六;十月初十日,禁戒不行房事,
bìngqiě nénggòu měiféng wǔyuè shísì, shíwǔ, shíliù; shí yuè chū shí rì, jìnjiè bùxíng fángshì, 並且能夠每逢五月十四、十五、十六;十月初十日,禁戒不行房事, |
vowing, moreover, to exert themselves to convert others |
同时,立愿此后要辗转劝诫别人。
tóngshí, lìyuàn cǐhòu yào zhǎnzhuǎn quàn jiè biéren. 同時,立願此後要輾轉勸誡別人。 |
—people such as these shall escape the bitterness of all the above-mentioned dungeons. |
如此,则准许免受以上诸小地狱的苦刑。
