The Fifth Court

The Fifth Court The Realm of Lord Yán Luó	第五殿阎罗天子 Dì-Wǔ Diàn Yán Luó Tiānzǐ 第五殿閻羅天子
His Infernal Majesty Yán Luó said,	阎罗天子说; Yán Luó tiānzǐ shuō? 閻羅天子說;
"My proper place is in the first court;	“我本来是居于第一殿， "Wǒ běnlái shì jūyú dìyī diàn, “我本來是居於第一殿，
but, pitying those who die by foul means, and should be sent back to earth to have their wrongs redressed,	因为可怜冤屈而死的人，屡次放还阳间伸冤，洗雪清白， yīnwèi kělián yuānqū ér sǐde rén, lǚcì fànghuán yángjiān shēnyuān, xǐxuě qīngbái, 因爲可憐冤屈而死的人，屢次放還陽間伸冤，洗雪清白，
I have moved my judgment-seat to the great hell at the bottom of the Ocean, away to the north-east below the Wòjiāo rock,	所以降调司掌大海之底，东北方沃燋石下的叫唤大地狱。 suǒyǐ jiàngdiào sī zhǎng dàhǎi zhī dǐ, dōngběifāng Wòjiāoshí xiàde jiàohuan dà dìyù. 所以降調司掌大海之底，東北方沃燋石下的叫喚大地獄。
and have subdivided this hell into sixteen dungeons for the torment of souls.	幷管理十六个诛心小地狱。 bìng guǎnlǐ shíliù gè zhū xīn xiǎo dìyù. 幷管理十六個誅心小地獄。
All those criminal shades who come before us have already suffered many years of torture in the previous four Courts,	所有分发到本殿的鬼犯，均已经前述的地狱，受罪很多年。 Suǒyǒu fēnfā dào běn diàn de guǐ fàn, jūn yǐjing qiánshù de dìyù, shòuzuì hěn duō nián. 所有分發到本殿的鬼犯，均已經前述的地獄，受罪很多年。
But even if they are not sinners and are passed on after seven days to this Court,	亦即在前四殿查核没甚么大过错，每人各按七日之期，解到本殿。 Yìjí zàiqián sì diàn cháhé méishénme dàguò cuò, měirén gè àn qī rì zhī qī, jiě dào běn diàn. 亦即在前四殿查核沒甚麽大過錯，每人各按七日之期，解到本殿。
and even if no hint of evil is found in them here, corruption will already have overtaken their bodies by the fifth or seventh day.	这些人在本殿也查不出丝毫作恶的事迹。其尸到五七日，没有不腐败的。 zhè xiē rén zài běn diàn yě chá bùchū sīháo zuò'è de shìjì. qí shī dào wǔ qī rì, méiyǒu bù fǔbài de. 這些人在本殿也查不出絲毫作惡的事迹。其屍到五七日，沒有不腐敗的。
Nevertheless there are ghosts who cry out either that they have left some vow unfulfilled,	这些鬼犯都说：“在世还有善愿尚未完了。” Zhè xiē guǐ fàn dōu shuō: "zàishì hái yǒu shàn yuàn shàngwèi wánle." 這些鬼犯都說：“在世還有善願尚未完了。”
or that they wish as an act of merit to build a temple or a bridge, or to make a road,	有的说修理、建盖寺院、桥梁、街路； yǒude shuō xiūlǐ, jiàngài sìyuàn, qiáoliáng, jiē lù; 有的說修理、建蓋寺院、橋梁、街路；
or to clean out a river or well, or to publish some book teaching people to be virtuous, which they still have left undone.	开河沟、挖水井，或者辑集劝善的书与文章等等善事尚未完成。 kāihé gōu, wā shuǐjǐng, huòzhě jí jí quànshàn de shū yǔ wénzhāng děng děng shànshì shàngwèi wánchéng. 開河溝、挖水井，或者輯集勸善的書與文章等等善事尚未完成。
that they have not released their due number of lives,	或是放生的数目未圆满; huòshi fàngshēng de shùmù wèi yuánmǎn; 或是放生的數目未圓滿;
that they have filial duties or funeral obsequies to perform,	父母尊亲奉养或死葬之事尚未全备周到; fùmǔ zūnqīn fèngyǎng huò sǐ zàng zhī shì shàngwèi quánbèi zhōudao; 父母尊親奉養或死葬之事尚未全備周到;
or some act of kindness still to repay.	另有受恩惠而未报答。 lìngyǒu shòu ēn ér wèi bàodá. 另有受恩而未報答。
For these reasons they pray to be allowed to return once more to the light of day,	为了以上等等事，哀求准许放还阳世。 Wèile yǐshàng děngděng shì, āiqiú zhǔnxǔ fànghuán yángshì. 爲了以上等等事，哀求准許放還陽世。
and are always ready to make oath that henceforth they will lead most exemplary lives.	因此没有一个不是立下誓愿一定做好人。 yīncǐ méiyǒu yī ge bù shì lìxia shìyuàn yī dìngzuò hǎorén. 因此沒有一個不是立下誓願一定做好人。
Hearing this, we reply,	我听了，说： Wǒ tīng le, shuō: 我聽了，說：
"In your days on earth you openly worked evil, as the sprits understand quite clearly;	"你们以往在世之时，做恶昭彰，神鬼了解得非常清楚。 Nǐmen yǐwǎng zàishì zhī shí, zuò è zhāozhāng, shén guǐ liǎojiě défēi cháng qīngchu. "你們以往在世之時，做惡昭彰，神鬼瞭解得非常清楚。
but now that your boat has reached the midstream, you think about of caulking the leak.	现在如同已到江水中间的船，发现漏水，要补已迟了。 xiànzài rútóng yǐ dào jiāngshuǐ zhōngjiān de chuán, fāxiàn lòushuǐ, yào bǔ yǐ chí le. 現在如同已到江水中間的船，發現漏水，要補已遲了。
We can see that if there were no hateful ghost in the land of the dead, there would be far less enmity among the living.	可见阴间要是没有怨恨的鬼；阳间少有仇怨的人。 Kějiàn yīnjiān yàoshi méiyǒu yuànhèn de guǐ; yángjiān shǎoyǒu chóuyuàn de rén. 可見陰間要是沒有怨恨的鬼；陽間少有仇怨的人。
But those who truly cultivate virtue are rare among the living.	真正修养德行的人，世间是难得少有。 Zhēnzhèng xiūyǎng déxíng de rén, shìjiān shì nándé shǎo yǒu. 真正修養德行的人，世間是難得少有。
But now you have come to my court, having beheld your own wickedness in the mirror of sin.	现在来到本殿的鬼犯，照过孽镜台，自然知道自己是恶类， Xiànzài láidào běn diàn de guǐ fàn, zhào guò niè jìngtái, zìrán zhīdào zìjǐ shì è lèi, 現在來到本殿的鬼犯，照過孽鏡臺，自然知道自己是惡類，
So say no more! Bull Head and Horse Face, take them away to the Terrace so they may once more gaze upon their lost homes!"	不用多说！牛头马面押上高台去望乡吧！” Bùyòng duō shuō! niútóumǎmiàn yā shànggāo tái qù wàng xiāng ba!" 不用多說！牛頭馬面押上高臺去望鄉吧！”

THE TERRACE FOR LOOKING HOME

The terrace referred to is called the Terrace for Looking Home	所设高台，名叫望乡台。 Suǒ shè gāotái, míng jiào Wàngxiāngtái. 所設高臺，名叫望鄉臺。
This Terrace is curved in front like a bow; it looks east, west, and south. It is eighty-one miles long from one extreme to the other.	望乡台的面，半圆形，朝向东、西、南三向，此台的弯面有八十一里； Wàngxiāngtái de miàn, bànyuánxíng, cháoxiàng dōng, xī, nán sān xiàng, cǐ tái de wān miàn yǒu bāshí yī lǐ; 望鄉臺的面，半圓形，朝向東、西、南三向，此臺的彎面有八十一裏；
The back part is straight, like the string of the bow;	台后平直，如同弓弦。 Tái hòu píngzhí, rútóng gōngxián. 臺後平直，如同弓弦。
On the north it is enclosed by a wall of sharp swords.	北方，以剑树立为城墙， Běifāng, yǐ jiàn shùlì wéi chéngqiáng, 北方，以劍樹立爲城牆，
It is 490 feet high; its sides are knife-blades;	台高四十九丈。以刀山为山坡， tái gāo sìshí jiǔ zhàng. yǐ dāoshān wéi shānpō, 臺高四十九丈。以刀山爲山坡，
and the whole is in sixty-three stories.	砌成六十三级的台阶。 qì chéng liùshí sān jí de táijiē. 砌成六十三級的臺階。
No virtuous person need come to this Terrace;	善良的人，不用登上此台； Shànliáng de rén, bùyòng dēngshàng cǐ tái; 善良的人，不用登上此臺；
neither do those whose balance of good and evil is exact.	功过相半的人，已发放往生轮回去了。 gōngguò xiāng bàn de rén, yǐ fāfàng wǎngshēng lúnhuí qù le. 功過相半的人，已發放往生輪回去了。

Wicked souls alone behold their homes close by and can see and hear what is going on.	只有作恶多端的人，才登台一望： Zhǐyǒu zuò'èduōduān de rén, cái dēngtái yīwàng: 只有作惡多端的人，才登臺一望：
When their old home is before their eyes, the can see the actions and and hear the conversations of their family and friends.	家乡如在眼前；所有的男女家人，亲友的言语、行为，都能看见、听见。 Jiāxiāng rú zài yǎnqián; suǒyǒu de nánnǚ jiārén, qīnyǒu de yányǔ, xíngwéi, dōu néng kànjian, tīngjiàn. 家鄉如在眼前；所有的男女家人，親友的言語、行爲，都能看見、聽見。

They hear old and young talking together; they see their last wishes and instructions disregarded .	看见老老少少，再也不遵从自己死亡前的吩咐与教训。 Kànjian lǎolǎo shàoshào, zàiyěbù zūncóng zìjǐ sǐwáng qián de fēnfù yǔ jiàoxun. 看見老老少少，再也不遵從自己死亡前的吩咐與教訓。
Everything they had arranged seems to have undergone a change.	所有自己以前决定的事全变换了，一件件地改掉。 Suǒyǒu zìjǐ yǐqián juédìng de shì quán biànhuàn le, yījiàn jiàn dì gǎidiào. 所有自己以前決定的事全變換了，一件件地改掉。
The property they scraped together with so much trouble is dissipated and gone.	辛苦挣来的财物，被搬运一空。 Xīnkǔ zhèng láide cáiwù, bèi bānyùn yīkōng. 辛苦掙來的財物，被搬運一空。
The husband thinks of taking another wife; the widow meditates second nuptials.	先生再娶小老婆、太太也再改嫁。 Xiānsheng zàiqǔ xiǎolǎopo, tàitai yě zài gǎijià. 先生再娶小老婆、太太也再改嫁。
The fields and property have been divided without thought.	田地、财产、被乱瓜分了。 Tiándì, cáichǎn, bèi luàn guāfēn le. 田地、財産、被亂瓜分了。
Debts long since paid are brought again for settlement, with false claims that the accounts are unclear.	原本清楚的帐目，被贪污得混溷不清。 Yuánběn qīngchu de zhàngmù, bèi tānwū dé hùn hùn bùqīng. 原本清楚的帳目，被貪污得混溷不清。
and the survivors are called upon to acknowledge claims upon the departed.	死人欠活人的帐，分文都难少； Sǐrén qiàn huórén de zhàng, fēnwén dōu nán shǎo; 死人欠活人的帳，分文都難少；
Debts owed are lost for want of receipts,	活人欠我的，由于失去证据， huórén qiàn wǒde, yóuyú shīqù zhèngjù, 活人欠我的，由於失去證據，
with endless recriminations, abuse, and evasive answers,	一概耍赖，恶形恶状地搪塞掉。 yīgài shuǎlài, è xíng è zhuàng dì tángsè diào. 一概耍賴，惡形惡狀地搪塞掉。
So the paternal, maternal, and spousal lineages all in their anger speak ill of the deceased.	所有父亲、母亲、妻子的族人，全怀怨地评论自己。 Suǒyǒu fùqin, mǔqin, qīzi de zúrén, quán huáiyuàn dì pínglùn zìjǐ. 所有父亲、母亲、妻子的族人，全怀怨地评论自己。
He sees his children become corrupt,	儿女个个心怀私心； Érnǚ gègè xīnhuái sīxīn; 兒女個個心懷私心；
and his friends fall away.	朋友则失去信用。 péngyou zé shīqùxìnyòng. 朋友則失去信用。
Some, perhaps, for the sake of bygone times,	略有几个亲友，想念自己在世地情分， Lüè yǒu jǐge qīnyǒu, xiǎngniàn zìjǐ zàishì dì qíngfen, 略有幾個親友，想念自己在世地情分，
may stroke the coffin let out a few sobs,	抚棺哭几声； fǔ guān kū jǐ shēng; 撫棺哭幾聲；
then turn, departing quickly with a sneer.	一回头，马上又冷笑两声。 yīhuí tóu, mǎshàng yòu lěngxiào liǎng shēng. 一回頭，馬上又冷笑兩聲。
Thus the bad things done in life gradually produce bad retributions after death.	以前在世间时所造的罪恶，逐渐出现恶报。 Yǐqián zàishì jiān shí suǒzào de zuì'è, zhújiàn chūxiàn èbào. 以前在世間時所造的罪惡，逐漸出現惡報。
The sons commit crimes and are hauled off to jail or are led astray by false friends.	儿子因犯罪，被系入狱；或被坏朋友带坏了。 Érzi yīn fànzuì, bèi xì rùyù; huò bèi huài péngyou dàihuài le. 兒子因犯罪，被繫入獄；或被壞朋友帶壞了。
the daughters contract some horrible disease, or become prostitutes.	女儿则生了怪病；或被奸淫。 nǚ'ér zé shēng le guài bìng; huò bèi jiānyín. 女兒則生了怪病；或被姦淫。
The family business has broken up, and the house has been destroyed by flood or fire,	事业瓦解了；房屋被火烧了， Shìyè wǎjiě le; fángwū bèi huǒshāo le, 事業瓦解了；房屋被火燒了，
and all the family's wealth has quickly been used up.	大大小小的家产，很快地消耗光了。 dàdà xiǎoxiǎo de jiāchǎn, hěn kuài dì xiāohào guāng le. 大大小小的家產，很快地消耗光了。
And does the retribution of evil deeds occur only among the ghosts in the land of shades?	其实，作恶得到报应的，又何只是阴魂呢？ Qí shí, zuò'è dédào bàoyìng de, yòu hé zhǐ shì yīnhún ne? 其實，作惡得到報應的，又何只是陰魂呢？
Some among the living also see the results of their evil [among the living].	有些阳间的人，也会亲见自己的恶报。 Yǒuxiē yángjiān de rén, yě huìqīn jiàn zìjǐ de èbào. 有些陽間的人，也會親見自己的惡報。
All souls, after the misery of the Terrace, will be thrust into the great hell,	所有邪恶的鬼犯看了以上情景后，押入叫唤大地狱内。 Suǒyǒu xié'è de guǐ fàn kàn le yǐshàng qíngjǐng hòu, yā rù jiàohuan dàdì yù nèi. 所有邪惡的鬼犯看了以上情景後，押入叫喚大地獄內。
and, when the nature of the of wickedness of each has been ascertained,	仔细地考察曾犯何种罪恶后， Zǐxì dì kǎochá céng fàn hézhǒng zuì'è hòu, 仔細地考察曾犯何種罪惡後，
they will enter the dungeons for the punishment of evil hearts being tortured.	再分发进入诛心小地狱去受苦。 zàifēn fā jìnrù zhū xīn xiǎo dìyù qù shòukǔ. 再分發進入誅心小地獄去受苦。

DUNGEONS OF THE FIFTH COURT

In the dungeons they will be buried under wooden pillars,	小地狱内，各地埋没危险的木桩； Xiǎo dìyù nèi, gèdì máimò wēixiǎn de mùzhuāng; 小地獄內，各地埋沒危險的木樁；
bound with copper snakes,	用铜蛇做成链子； yòng tóng shé zuòchéng liànzi; 用銅蛇做成鏈子；
crushed by iron dogs,	用铁铸的狗做土堆， yòng tiě zhù de gǒu zuò tǔduī, 用鐵鑄的狗做土堆，
tied tightly hand and foot,	将人捆绑、压制住手脚。 jiāng rén kǔnbǎng, yāzhì zhùshǒu jiǎo. 將人捆綁、壓制住手腳。
be ripped open and have their hearts torn out,	再用一小刀，将人开膛破肚，钩出心脏。 zài yòng yī xiǎodāo, jiāng rén kāitángpòdù, gōu chūxīn zàng. 再用一小刀，將人開膛破肚，鈎出心臟。
minced up and given to snakes,	一块块地割下来，心脏给蛇吃， yī kuài kuài dì gē xiàlai, xīnzàng gěi shé chī, 一塊塊地割下來，心臟給蛇吃，
their entrails being thrown to dogs.	肠子给狗吃。 chángzi gěi gǒu chī. 腸子給狗吃。
Then, when their time is up,	如此受苦期满之日， Rúcǐ shòukǔ qī mǎn zhī rì, 如此受苦期滿之日，
the pain will cease and their bodies become whole once more,	痛止皮肤完好， tòng zhǐ pífū wánhǎo, 痛止皮膚完好，
preparatory to being passed through the remaining dungeons, in each of which once again their they are tortured.	再分发以下各殿地狱去受苦： zàifēn fā yǐxià gè diàn dìyù qù shòukǔ: 再分發以下各殿地獄去受苦：
1. The Dungeon for Non-Worshippers and Those Who Doubt Karma	一名将不敬鬼神、猜疑是否有因果报应等心肠割掉的小地狱。 yī Míng Jiāng Bùjìng Guǐshén, Cāiyí Shìfǒu Yǒuyīn Guǒbào Yìng Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 一名將不敬鬼神、猜疑是否有因果報應等心腸割掉的小地獄。
2. The Dungeon of Those Who Have Destroyed or Hurt Living Creatures	二名将杀害生命等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Èr Míng Jiāng Shāhài Shēngmìng Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 二名將殺害生命等心腸割掉的小地獄。
3. The Dungeon for Those Who Do Not Fulfill Vows, But Turn Instead to Evil	三名将善愿未完，就先行罪恶等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Sān Míng Jiāng Shàn Yuàn Wèiwán, Jiùxiān Xíng Zuì'è Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 三名將善願未完，就先行罪惡等心腸割掉的小地獄。
4. The Dungeon For Believers in Heterodoxy or With Erroneous Behavior, Who Turn Their Backs on Justice, Who Study Magic or Wild Schemes To Prolong Life.	四名将亲近邪恶，行为错误、违背正理，学习方术，妄想长生等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Sì Míng Jiāng Qīnjìn Xié'è, Xíngwéi Cuòwù, Wéibèi Zhènglǐ, Xuéxí Fāngshù, Wàngxiǎng Chángshēng Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 四名將親近邪惡，行爲錯誤、違背正理，學習方術，妄想長生等心腸割掉的小地獄。
5. The Dungeon for Those Who Bully the Virtuous and Fear the Wicked, or Who Wickedly Wish Others To Die	五名将欺善怕恶、邪恶地怨恨他人何不快死等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Wǔ Míng Jiāng Qīshànpà'è, Xié'è Dì Yuànhèn Tārén Hébù Kuài Sǐděng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 五名將欺善怕惡、邪惡地怨恨他人何不快死等心腸割掉的小地獄。
6. The Dungeon for Those Who Wrangle over Fame and Wealth or Right and Wrong and who Blame Others	六名将计较名利、是非、移祸他人等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Liù Míng Jiāng Jìjiào Mínglì, Shìfei, Yíhuò Tārén Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 六名將計較名利、是非、移禍他人等心腸割掉的小地獄。
7. The Dungeon for Those Who Rape Women or Contrive to Make Women Lose Their Honor,	七名将强奸妇女，设计令妇女失贞， Qī Míng Jiāng Qiángjiān Fùnǚ, Shèjì Lìng Fùnǚ Shī Zhēn, 七名將強姦婦女，設計令婦女失貞，
or lure women unjustly into satisfying their lusts	引诱妇女委屈地顺从自己的淫意， yǐnyòu fùnǚ wěiqu dì shùncóng zìjǐ de yín yì, 引誘婦女委屈地順從自己的淫意，
or who, without regard to the damage they cause, lust after degenerate pleasures with women	或者不论有无谋害之意，与妇女贪变淫乐等心肠割掉的小地狱。 huòzhě bùlùn yǒuwú móuhài zhī yì, yǔ fùnǚ tān biàn yínlè děng xīncháng gē diào de xiǎo dìyù. 或者不論有無謀害之意，與婦女貪變淫樂等心腸割掉的小地獄。
8. The Dungeon for Those Who Injure Others To Benefit Themselves.	八名将损人利己等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Bā Míng Jiāng Sǔnrén Lìjǐ Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 八名將損人利己等心腸割掉的小地獄。
9. The Dungeon for Those Who are Miserly and Unwilling to Give Alms	九名将悭贪不舍；不愿布施； Jiǔ Míng Jiāng Qiān Tān Bùshě; Bù Yuàn Bù Shī; 九名將慳貪不舍；不願佈施；
who are unwilling to attend to those facing situations of life and death or extreme difficulties	不愿顾别人面临生死，紧急之困境等心肠割掉的小地狱。 bùyuàn gù biéren miànlín shēngsǐ, jǐnjí zhī kùnjìng děng xīncháng gē diào de xiǎo dìyù. 不願顧別人面臨生死，緊急之困境等心腸割掉的小地獄。
10. The Dungeon for Those Who Steal the Wealth of Others	十名将偷窃、盗取别人财物； Shí Míng Jiāng Tōuqiè, Dàoqǔ Biéren Cáiwù; 十名將偷竊、盜取別人財物；
and unconscionably refuse to repay debts.	昧着良心耍赖而不还债等心肠割掉的小地狱。 mèizhe liángxīn shuǎlài ér bù huánzhài děng xīncháng gē diào de xiǎo dìyù. 昧著良心耍賴而不還債等心腸割掉的小地獄。
11. The Dungeon for Those Who Forget Kindness or Seek Revenge	十一名将忘恩负义、以德报怨等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Shíyī Míng Jiāng Wàng'ēn Fùyì, Yǐ Dé Bào Yuàn Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 十一名將忘恩負義、以德報怨等心腸割掉的小地獄。
12. The Dungeon for Those Who Love Fighting and Gambling and Winning	十二名将好斗、好赌、好胜、 Shí'èr Míng Jiāng Hào Dǒu, Hào Dǔ, Hào Shèng, 十二名將好鬥、好賭、好勝、
and stirring up and implicating others	以致牵连、拖累他人等心肠割掉的小地狱。 yǐzhì qiānlián, tuōlěi tārén děng xīncháng gē diào de xiǎo dìyù. 以致牽連、拖累他人等心腸割掉的小地獄。
13. The Dungeon for Those Who, for Fame or Profit, Deceive or Spread False Reports	十三名将为了名利、欺骗、诱惑大众等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Shísān Míng Jiāng Wèile Mínglì, Qīpiàn, Yòuhuò Dàzhòng Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 十三名將爲了名利、欺騙、誘惑大衆等心腸割掉的小地獄。
14. The Dungeon for Those Who, Not Brawling Themselves, Viciously Incited Others	十四名将自己虽未亲自加害，但却狠毒地教唆他人去害人等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Shísì Míng Jiāng Zìjǐ Suī Wèi Qīnzì Jiāhài, Dàn Què Hěndú Dì Jiàosuō Tārén Qù Hàirén Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 十四名將自己雖未親自加害，但卻狠毒地教唆他人去害人等心腸割掉的小地獄。
15. The Dungeon for Those Who Envy the Virtuous and Wise	十五名将妒嫉善良、贤能等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Shíwǔ Míng Jiāng Dùjí Shànliáng, Xiánnéng Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 十五名將妒嫉善良、賢能等心腸割掉的小地獄。
16. The Dungeon for Those Who Are Lost in Vice, Who Refuse to Reform, or Who Slander Others	十六名将执迷不悟，死不改过；诽谤他人等心肠割掉的小地狱。 Shíliù Míng Jiāng Zhímí Bù Wù, Sǐbù Gǎiguò; Fěibàng Tārén Děng Xīncháng Gē Diào De Xiǎo Dìyù. 十六名將執迷不悟，死不改過；誹謗他人等心腸割掉的小地獄。

SINNERS OF THE FIFTH COURT

Those who go to these dungeons are the ones guilty of the following crimes:	世间的人，凡是犯了以下罪行，即入此等地狱。 Shìjiān de rén, fánshì fàn le yǐxià zuìxíng, jí rù cǐděng dìyù. 世間的人，凡是犯了以下罪行，即入此等地獄。
1. All who disbelieve the doctrine of Cause and Effect, who obstruct good works,	不信因果，阻止别人行善事。 Bù xìn yīnguǒ, zǔzhǐ biéren xíngshàn shì. 不信因果，阻止別人行善事。
2. who make a pretence of piety,	借名去庙寺拈香礼佛， jièmíng qù miào sì niān xiāng lǐfó, 借名去廟寺拈香禮佛，
but talk of other people's sins,	却谈论别人的是非。 què tánlùn biéren de shìfei. 卻談論別人的是非。
3. who burn or injure religious books and tracts,	烧毁劝善的书籍、文章。 shāohuǐ quànshàn de shūjí, wénzhāng. 燒燬勸善的書籍、文章。
4. who fail to fast from meat when worshipping,	礼拜神、佛，却吃食荤肉。 lǐbài shén, fó, què chīshí hūn ròu. 禮拜神、佛，卻吃食葷肉。
5. who interfere with others who would chant or say incantations,	厌恶别人念佛、诵咒。 yànwù biéren niànfó, sòng zhòu. 厭惡別人念佛、誦咒。
6. who when engaging in such worship as the General Salvation or Salvation of the Dead	作佛事：如普渡、超渡亡魂、 zuò fóshì: rú Pǔdù, Chāodù Wánghún, 作佛事：如普渡、超渡亡魂、
or temple festivals for Guānyīn, or the Festival of Washing the Buddha,	观音法会、浴佛节等时， Guānyīn Fǎhuì, yù Fó Jié děng shí, 觀音法會、浴佛節等時，
do not remain vegetarian or keep pure in body, word, and thought.	不茹素、不持戒清净身、口、意三业。 bù rúsù, bù chíjiè qīngjìng shēn, kǒu, yì sānyè. 不茹素、不持戒清淨身、口、意三業。
7. who slander those who study the ways of Buddhism or who cultivate the Way	诽谤学佛、修道的人。 fěibàng xué Fó, xiūdào de rén. 誹謗學佛、修道的人。
8. who, themselves literate, decline to read tales of karmic retribution or moral essays to illiterate women and children	识字的人，不肯将古今报应的故事，劝世的文章等，念给未识字的妇幼等人知道。 shízì de rén, bùkěn jiāng gǔjīn bàoyìng de gùshi, quànshì de wénzhāng děng, niàn gěi wèishí zì de fùyòu děng rén zhīdào. 識字的人，不肯將古今報應的故事，勸世的文章等，念給未識字的婦幼等人知道。
9. who dig up graves and obliterate all traces thereof,	挖掘别人的墓，再予以填平灭迹。 wājué biéren de mù, zài yǔyǐ tiánpíng mièjī. 挖掘別人的墓，再予以填平滅迹。
10. who set fire to woods and forests,	放火蔓延，焚燬山林， fànghuǒ mànyán, fénhuǐ shānlín, 放火蔓延，焚燬山林，
or are careless in handling fire and thus endanger their neighbors' houses;	或疏于防犯家人，以致失火延烧邻居． huò shūyú fángfàn jiārén, yǐzhì shīhuǒ yánshāo línjū. 或疏於防犯家人，以致失火延燒鄰居．
11. those who wantonly discharge arrows and bolts,	射箭或用枪枝，射杀禽兽。 shèjiàn huò yòng qiāngzhī, shèshā qínshòu. 射箭或用槍枝，射殺禽獸。
12. those who try their strength against the sick or weak,	引诱、逼迫疾病、瘦弱的人来比赛体力。 yǐnyòu, bīpò jíbìng, shòuruò de rén lái bǐsài tǐlì. 引誘、逼迫疾病、瘦弱的人來比賽體力。
making them feel inferior or injuring them.	另其自卑或伤身。 lìng qí zìbēi huò shāngshēn. 另其自卑或傷身。
13. those who throw potsherds over a wall and hurt passers-by,	隔壁抛掷瓦石、误伤行人。 gébì pāozhì wǎ shí, wùshāng xíngrén. 隔壁抛擲瓦石、誤傷行人。
14. those who poison fish,	用毒药在河流中毒杀鱼类。 yòng dúyào zài héliú zhòngdú shā yúlèi. 用毒藥在河流中毒殺魚類。
15. those who let off guns to catch birds	放置射杀鸟类的火枪暗器； fàngzhì shèshā niǎolèi de huǒqiāng ànqì; 放置射殺鳥類的火槍暗器；
or do so with nets, sticky poles, or traps;	造捕杀鸟兽的丝网、粘竿、陷阱； zào bǔshā niǎoshòu de sīwǎng, nián gān, xiànjǐng; 造捕殺鳥獸的絲網、粘竿、陷阱；
those who throw down salt brine to kill plants,	或以盐卤、毒药等洒于草地。 huò yǐ yán lǔ, dúyào děng sǎ yú cǎodì. 或以鹽鹵、毒藥等灑於草地。
16. those who do not bury dead cats and venomous snakes deep enough in the ground,	死猫、毒蛇等物不埋入深土中， sǐ māo, dúshé děng wù bù mái rù shēn tǔ zhōng, 死貓、毒蛇等物不埋入深土中，
with the result that others dig them up, endangering their lives	以致有人挖出；留下的洞穴，害人丧命。 yǐzhì yǒu rén wāchū; liúxia de dòngxué, hàirén sàngmìng. 以致有人挖出；留下的洞穴，害人喪命。
17. those who turn over the frozen soil in the cold of winter or early spring so small creatures freeze	冬天春天寒冻时开垦，挖掘土地，令虫类冻死； dōngtiān chūntiān hán dòng shí kāikěn, wājué tǔdì, lìng chóng lèi dòngsǐ; 冬天春天寒凍時開墾，挖掘土地，令蟲類凍死；
or alter walls and stoves so that people catch cold or go hungry.	拆墙，改灶致令人受寒受饿。 chāi qiáng, gǎi zào zhì lìngrén shòuhán shòu è. 拆牆，改竈致令人受寒受餓。
18. those who encroach on the public road or take possession of other people's land,	私人的身份，却假用官家的头衔，以势力霸占民地。 sīrén de shēnfen, què jiǎ yòng guānjiā de tóuxián, yǐ shìli bàzhàn mín dì. 私人的身份，卻假用官家的頭銜，以勢力霸佔民地。
19. those who stop up wells and drains with the result that others can't easily drink	无缘无故填塞水井、水沟，致令人饮水不便。 wúyuán wúgù tiánsāi shuǐjǐng, shuǐgōu, zhì lìngrén yǐn shuǐ bùbiàn. 無緣無故填塞水井、水溝，致令人飲水不便。
—all these, when they return from the Terrace, shall first be tortured in the great hell,	如果违反了以上各项罪事的，即押赴望乡台，发入叫唤大地狱。受苦之后， Rúguǒ wéifǎn le yǐshàng gèxiàng zuì shì de, jí yā fù wàngxiāngtái, fā rù jiàohuan dàdì yù. shòukǔ zhī hòu, 如果違反了以上各項罪事的，即押赴望鄉臺，發入叫喚大地獄。受苦之後，
and then such as are to have their hearts minced	如果应该割碎心脏的， rúguǒ yīnggāi gē suì xīnzàng de, 如果應該割碎心臟的，
shall be passed into the sixteen dungeons for torture,	就押交给各层小地狱，判罪受刑。 jiù yā jiāogěi gè céng xiǎo dìyù, pànzuì shòuxíng. 就押交給各層小地獄，判罪受刑。
thence to be sent on to the Sixth Court for the punishment of other crimes.	刑满后，转解第六殿，查对有无其他的罪。 xíngmǎn hòu, zhuǎnjiè dì liù diàn, cháduì yǒuwú qítā de zuì. 刑滿後，轉解第六殿，查對有無其他的罪。
Whether or not people have, while still in the human world, been guilty of the above sins,	假如世人在世时，不论有否犯前项等罪事， Jiǎrú shìrén zàishì shí, bùlùn yǒufǒu fàn qiánxiàng děng zuì shì, 假如世人在世時，不論有否犯前項等罪事，
if on the 8th day of the 1st moon, they fast from meat, and remain clean in body, word, and thought	能在正月初八茹素，禁戒身口意清净， néng zài zhēngyuè chūbā rúsù, jìnjiè shēn kǒu yì qīngjìng, 能在正月初八茹素，禁戒身口意清淨，
and vow to sin no more, then theyshall not only escape the punishments of this Court,	誓愿不再犯罪的话，不仅本殿各地狱的刑罚可以避免， shìyuàn bùzài fànzuì dehuà, bù jǐn běn diàn gèdì yù de xíngfá kěyǐ bìmiǎn, 誓願不再犯罪的話，不僅本殿各地獄的刑罰可以避免，
but shall also gain some further remission of torture in the Sixth Court.	并且准许请求第六殿轻刑罚。 bìngqiě zhǔnxǔ qǐngqiú dì liù diàn qīng xíngfá. 並且准許請求第六殿輕刑罰。
Except for people who are guilty of taking life, of gross immorality and behavior breaching justice,	除了杀生害命，亲近邪恶；行为违反正理； Chúle shāshēng hàimìng, qīnjìn xié'è; xíngwéi wéifǎn zhènglǐ; 除了殺生害命，親近邪惡；行爲違反正理；
of fornication harming women or, in the case of women, of being lustful, fierce, and hateful,	男子奸淫毒害妇女；妇人贪淫、泼悍、妒恨； nánzǐ jiān yín dúhài fùnǚ; fùrén tān yín, pōhàn, dùhèn; 男子姦淫毒害婦女；婦人貪淫、潑悍、妒恨；
who are guilty of injuring women's reputation or honor	损害妇女名誉节操； sǔnhài fùnǚ míngyù jiécāo; 損害婦女名譽節操；
who are guilty of of stealing and acting without conscience,	偷盗财物，昧心耍赖； tōudào cáiwù, mèixīn shuǎlài; 偷盜財物，昧心耍賴；
or of ingratitude and revenge,	忘恩报怨； wàng'ēn bàoyuàn; 忘恩報怨；
and who persist in their error	以及在生时执迷不悟， yǐjí zài shēngshí zhímí bù wù, 以及在生時執迷不悟，
which no warnings can turn from its course,	即使见闻劝善的文章句子，也不立即悔改的人以外， jíshǐ jiànwén quànshàn de wénzhāng jùzi, yě bù lìjí huǐgǎi de rén yǐwài, 即使見聞勸善的文章句子，也不立即悔改的人以外，
—except for such people all can with ease cut their prison terms.	一概皆可轻易地减刑。 yīgài jiē kě qīngyì dì jiǎnxíng. 一概皆可輕易地減刑。
