The Moquegua Archaeological Survey (continued) In 2003, I began a third project phase titled titled "El
Niño floods and Culture Change: Migration and Climate Catastrophe
on the Pacific Rim". In the 2003 and 2004 seasons, the MAS team conducted
test excavations and systematic surface collections at eight archaeological
sites, covering the Formative, Middle Horizon (Wari and Tiwanaku), Late
Intermediate and Inca periods in the middle Moquegua valley. Simultaneously,
we conducted a geomorphological survey of the valley's flood history and
floodplain soil processes. Ongoing further survey, analysis and dating
will illuminate the interaction of culture processes and agrarian practices
with major flood events and other environmental changes.
