3. Evaluation Practice

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this lesson, the students will be able to:

*

Apply critical thinking skills while critiquing Web sites.

*

Recognize the differences between a credible Web site and a questionable one.

*

Make judgments as to which sites could be used as acceptable resource material for the research paper.

MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT

*

Computer lab with Internet access.

*

Class copies of Web Evaluation Worksheet

 TIME

*

2 class periods or 96-100 minutes of instruction.

PROCESS

DAY 1 – Practicing the Evaluation of Web Sites.

*

Review evaluation techniques and indicators.

-          Author Credibility

-          Purpose of Site

-          Domain (URL)

-          Currency

-          Design

*

Hand out copies of  Web Evaluation Worksheet

-          Students should use the worksheets to evaluate a Web site (preferably one that they would like to use for their research paper).  The teacher should be available to assist the students.

-          Allow 15 minutes for the students to examine and evaluate their chosen site.

HOMEWORK

*

Students should be prepared to share and explain their evaluation results during the next class period.

*

Extra Credit: Students can evaluate another school-appropriate site (preferably one that they would like to use for their research paper.)

 

DAY 2 - Practicing the Evaluation of Web Sites.

*

Students should evaluate up to four (4) school-appropriate Web sites, all from different domains (.gov, .edu, .com, .org, .net), using the checklist provided on DAY 1. The teacher should be available to assist the students. If the students have trouble finding the different domains, the teacher should suggest the following sites:

-          .gov – http://www.business.gov/

-          .edu – http://www.uky.edu/ArtsSciences/English/wc/credibility.html

-          .com – http://www.jg-tc.com/

-          .org - http://www.goldenrescue.org

-          .net – http://www.freewebspace.net

HOMEWORK

*

Students should choose one evaluation and write a narrative, explaining their thought process throughout the evaluation.  Also, the narrative should relate why the chosen Web site is credible or not (according to their evaluation).
