Dear Margaret,

As I wrote you previously, bicycling is the exclusive method of travel, and the skill of the people is quite remarkable. It is not unusual to see a boy or girl of about four pedaling along with his short feet catching the pedals only on the upswing. On Sunday going to church, the women in their finery sitting on those seats, steering with one hand and holding a parasol in the other. They have all sorts of gadgets -- a chair built over the front wheels for the baby and a basket over the rear for the groceries. It is not uncommon to see an infant of about eight months sitting nonchalantly on a speeding cycle. Another common sight is for the kid brother to be sitting on the seat and the older brother to be pedaling while poised over the pedals.

Much love,

Herb
