September 2, 1943 Dear Margaret, We are having calisthenics and close order drill every day now. In spite of all the griping, it is the best thing in the world. I can again touch my toes with outstretched fingers after several days of straining and struggling. The shower after the drill sets up the day. We are having coffee klatch each day now at 3 p.m. Coffee, a smoke, and sometimes doughnuts makes a pleasant break in the afternoon. The work has slowed up some, but I am doing a lot of medical reading. We have a pretty decent library now. Mrs. Roosevelt is in Australia. We don't expect to see her, but the way she gets around I wouldn't be surprised at anything. Much love, Herb |
