Dear Margaret,

Today the rains came -- all night and all day. At first it was a fine mist and pleasant to walk in, but recently it has been coming down in buckets. By comparison Oregon is a desert. The clouds are low, lying against the mountains at an elevation of only about two hundred feet. It is an impressive sight.
