May 29, 1944 Dear Margaret, After several days of strenuous physical exertion, we are now relaxing completely. With about thirty-six hours of sleep and resting, I feel like a new man. I can now qualify as a professional piano and furniture mover. After twenty-four hours in our new location nails are hammered into place, shelves placed, lines hung, and most important -- your picture hanging from a tent strap. I am right at home for an indefinite period. This afternoon we went into town on a bus. The driver was a WNEL (Women's National Emergency League - something like our WAC's). She was evidently new, and the ride was quite an experience. In the first place she couldn't handle the bus, and it moved in fits and starts. Then she didn't know the route. She went past several turns and had to be directed by the passengers. Finally when she had to turn around after passing a turn, she didn't know where reverse was on the gear shift. (It's down and to the right on these trucks.) Again she had to be informed by one of the soldiers. It was just like a movie sequence. The small-size mosquitoes here are as big as our household flies. The large-size ones are much bigger. However, they are of the pest variety and not disease carriers. Much love, Herb |
