May 27, 1944 Dear Margaret, Yesterday was spent on the train. This time the accommodations were improved; we had so-called Pullmans. As soon as we got on the train, we pulled down the upper berths and filled them with luggage, budding rolls, musette bags, hand luggage and all. Formerly we would put all that stuff in the baggage car, but so much of it would get lost that now we don't let it get out of sight. I slept most of the time being dead tired with only about two hours sleep the previous night. We brought along our own food, and we were fairly comfortable. Later in the day we played some poker using a blanket stretched out between the seats for a table. It was a very functional unit. The money would be pitched in the center, and the winner would collect by depressing his end and waiting for the money to slide. Much love, Herb |
