ALLIES' HEAVY ARTILLERY BOMBARDS MESSINA AS TWO COLUMNS ADVANCE TOWARD CITY; AMERICANS TAKE ANOTHER SOLOMON ISLAND

August 17, 1943 Dear Margaret, It rained quite a bit last night, but the ground here is very porous. In the morning the ground was dry. The moon here is terrifically bright. you can almost read newsprint out in the yard. Incidentally, our back yard is very picturesque. There is an open shed in the back, and the mountain peak is directly in the background. There are trees on the sides, and the bright moon casting oblique shadows reminds me of a stage setting. Much love, Herb |
