| 1. | And then the Buddha told the King of Self-Mastery: “The arhat whose merit supported Shining Eye is now the Bodhisattva of Inexhaustible Intention (Wújìnyì Púsà 无尽意菩萨). Shining Eye’s mother has become the Bodhisattva of Emancipation (Jiětuō Púsà 解脱菩萨). | 佛告定自在王。 「尔时罗汉。 福度光目者。 即无尽意菩萨是。 光目母者。 即解脱菩萨是。 Fó gào Dìngzìzài wáng. “Ěrshí luóhàn. Fú dù Guāngmù zhě. | 2. | And Shining Eye has become the Bodhisattva Dìzàng. For countless kalpas he has been sharing his mercy through vows as numerous as the sands along the Ganges to save all creatures. | 光目女者。 即地藏菩萨是。 过去久远劫中。 如是慈愍。 发恒河沙愿。 广度众生。 Guāngmù nǚ zhě. Jí Dìzàng púsà shì. Guòqù jiǔyuǎn jié zhōng. Rúshì cí mǐn. Fā Hénghé shā yuàn. Guǎngdù zhòngshēng. 光目女者。 即地藏菩薩是。 過去久遠劫中。 如是慈愍。 發恒河沙願。 廣度衆生。 |
| 3. | The people of the future, be they male or female, though they fail to do good deeds and even commit sins, though they disbelieve in cause and effect, though they indulge in sinful sex or bald lies, | 「未来世中。 若有男子女人。 不行善者。 行恶者。 乃至不信因果者。 邪淫妄语者。 “Wèilái shì zhōng. Ruòyǒu nánzǐ nǚrén. Bùxíng shànzhě. Xíng è zhě. Nǎizhì bù xìn yīnguǒ zhě. Xié yín wàngyǔ zhě. 「未來世中。 若有男子女人。 不行善者。 行惡者。 乃至不信因果者。 邪婬妄語者。 |
| 4. | though they be two-tongued or foul-mouthed, though they defame Mahayana Buddhism, and although all who act so should suffer the bad destinies, | 两舌恶口者。 毁谤大乘者。 如是诸业众生。 必堕恶趣。 Liǎng shé èkǒu zhě. Huǐbàng Dàshèng zhě. Rúshì zhū yè zhòngshēng. Bì duò èqù. 兩舌惡口者。 毀謗大乘者。 如是諸業衆生。 必墮惡趣。 |
| 5. | still, if they should they meet good and wise people, and be exhorted by them and take their refuge in the Bodhisattva Dìzàng, then all creatures should soon be liberated from the three foul paths. | 若遇善知识。 劝令一弹指间。 归依地藏菩萨。 是诸众生。 即得解脱三恶道报。 Ruò yù shàn zhīshi. Quàn lìng yī tánzhǐ jiān. Guīyī Dìzàng púsà. Shì zhū zhòngshēng. Jí déjiě tuō sān èdào bào. 若遇善知識。 勸令一彈指間。 歸依地藏菩薩。 是諸衆生。 即得解脫三惡道報。 |
| 6. | Should they be determined and respectful, giving praise and worshipping, offering incense, flowers, and garments, and all kinds of jewels and treasures, or providing food and drink, then those who do these things shall enjoy the delights of all the heavens for countless billions of kalpas. | 若能志心归敬。 及瞻礼赞叹。 香华衣服。 种种珍宝。 或复饮食。 如是奉事者。 未来百千万亿劫中。 常在诸天受胜妙乐。 Ruò néng zhìxīn guī jìng. Jí zhānlǐ zàntàn. Xiāng huá yīfu. Zhǒngzhǒng zhēnbǎo. Huò fù yǐnshí. Rúshì fèngshì zhě. Wèilái bǎi qiānwàn yìjié zhōng. Cháng zài zhū tiān shòu shèng miào lè. 若能志心歸敬。 及瞻禮讚歎。 香華衣服。 種種珍寶。 或復飲食。 如是奉事者。 未來百千萬億劫中。 常在諸天受勝妙樂。 |
| 7. | And when their time of celestial happiness ends and they are born as humans again, still for hundreds of thousands of kalpas they shall be emperors and kings, and able to remember the whole course of their karmic causes and effects | 若天福尽。 下生人间。 犹百千劫。 常为帝王。 能忆宿命因果本末。 Ruò tiān fú jìn. Xiàshēng rénjiān. Yóu bǎi qiān jié. Cháng wéi dìwáng. Néng yì sùmìng yīnguǒ běnmò. 若天福盡。 下生人間。 猶百千劫。 常為帝王。 能憶宿命因果本末。 |
| 8. | Know then, King of Self-Mastery, that such is the bodhisattva Dìzàng, and such too is his unimaginable spiritual power for the salvation of all creatures. | 定自在王。 如是地藏菩萨。 有如此不可思议大威神力。 广利众生。 Dìngzìzài wáng. Rúshì Dìzàng púsà. Yǒurú cǐ bùkěsīyì dà wēi shénlì. Guǎng lì zhòngshēng. 定自在王。 如是地藏菩薩。 有如此不可思議大威神力。 廣利衆生。 |
| 9. | You bodhisattvas should all note this scripture and spread it abroad.” | 汝等诸菩萨。 当记是经。 广宣流布。」 Rǔ děng zhū púsà. Dāng jì shì jīng. Guǎng xuān liúbù.” 汝等諸菩薩。 當記是經。 廣宣流布。」 |
| 10. | The King of Self-Mastery replied to the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One, do not worry. We, the thousands and billions of bodhisattvas and Great Beings will certainly be able to make use of Buddha’s great spiritual power to spread this scripture throughout the known world (jambūdvīpa; yánfútí 阎浮提) for the benefit of all creatures.” | 定自在王白佛言。 「世尊。 愿不有虑。 我等千万亿菩萨摩诃萨。 必能承佛威神广演是经于阎浮提。 利益众生。 」 Dìngzìzài wáng bái Fó yán. “Shìzūn. Yuàn bù yǒu lǜ. Wǒděng qiānwàn yì púsà mó hē sà. Bì néng chéng Fó wēi shén guǎng yǎn shì jīng yú yán fú tí. Lìyì zhòngshēng. ” 定自在王白佛言。 「世尊。 願不有慮。 我等千萬億菩薩摩訶薩。 必能承佛威神廣演是經於閻浮提。 利益衆生。 」 |
