Figure 11
Winter Count, Yankton Lakota, 1900-1910.
Ink and pigment on cotton cloth.
This winter count was produced on the Fort Totten Reservation
in North Dakota.
Read from the lower left and spiraling towards the center, the
piece chronicles the years 1823 to 1911.
A Nakota transliteration appears by each entry, probably added
by a school teacher.

going across to the left).
· 1833 - The stars fell, Leonid meteor shower seen
in No. America.
· 1837, 1838 - Great smallpox epidemic.
· 1877 - The year of the withering winter, extremely
harsh winter, Yanktonai Sioux's first year on reservation (2nd
row from top, right of center).
