We will hold an in-class discussion next Tuesday, May 6.  Each group (see groups below) is assigned a question to discuss and present to the class.  Please feel free to discuss your ideas with the members of your group before class.

Group 1:  Describe beliefs that Native groups in the Northeast and Great Lakes areas held concerning disease.  How might these views have changed with European contact?

Group 2:  Why did Native groups participate in the fur trade?  How persuasive do you find the motives that Martin argues for?  Are there alternative interpretations?  What does Krech’s argument add to the picture?

Group 3:  According to Martin, why did the Native American groups of the Great Lakes area violate their own religious ideas and slaughter animals indiscriminately?  When does Martin maintain that this took place (groups may have different chronologies)?  How are Europeans implicated? How convincing do you find Martin’s evidence that the Woodlands groups did this?

Group 4:  How does what we know about the Midéwiwin religion fit with the kind of changes in Indian cultural world view that Wallace described as “new religions” that functioned as an “adaptive system”?

Group 5:  Is there a better way to understand the role that the Midéwiwin religion played in Ojibwa cultural and historical change than those suggested by Martin, Krech, and Wallace?

Please make sure you have done the reading and thought carefully about the questions.  I will take attendance and the discussion session forms a part of your grade.
