1) What are the advantages and disadvantages of PACL’s regime classification system?  (PACL = Przeworski, Alvarez, Cheibub, and Limongi).

2) When do politicians act in the public interest?  Which institutions or factors are important?  Does regime type matter?  Is there a disconnect between theory and empirics vis-à-vis this question?

3) How do we explain Przeworski’s table of “miracles and disasters?” (table 3.9, p. 177).  Why has Taiwan grown while most of Africa has not?  Do any of the accounts of authoritarian regimes (Linz & Stepan, Roeder, Bratton & van de Walle, Haggard) help explain this variation?  Do these cases confirm or contradict the logic in Olson and BDM?

4) When (and to whom) are authoritarian leaders accountable?  Are authoritarian leaders ever completely unconstrained?  Do they ever face a WC of just themselves?

5) Is authoritarian government weak or strong?
