Brain
Computer Interface (BCI) is any system which can
derive meaningful information directly from the user's brain activity
in real time. Modern BCIs use information obtained
from the user's encephalogram (EEG), though BCIs
based on other brain imaging methods are theoretically possible.
BCIs are currently an embryonic technology and do not
have the speed, accuracy, or ease of use to replace conventional
interfaces such as keyboards or mice. However, there
are already several different BCI systems which can provide an alternate
means of communication for disabled individuals who cannot communicate
via other means. Many of these systems are being improved
and will soon be of value to many different people in a wide variety
of environments and situations.
