J.
Lawrence Broz is Professor
of Political Science at UC San Diego. He earned his PhD from UCLA in
1993 and he
held professorships at Harvard University (1993-2000) and New York
University (2000-2001). His research in International Political Economy
(IPE) focuses on how domestic political institutions shape global
economic governance, central banking, and foreign economic policy. He
studies the legislative politics of international financial
institutions—specifically U.S. Congressional voting on IMF funding and
international financial rescues—as well as the historical origins,
institutional design, and emergency lending roles of central banks like
the Federal Reserve. His recent work examines the political economy of
globalization, exploring how regional economic decline fuels political
populism, alters trade policy, and reshapes global economic leadership
and international cooperation.
