April 16, 1944 Dear Margaret, Today a group of us went horseback riding. The Australian horses are reputed to be relatively wild and poorly trained. That I can well believe. We went out for two hours and I spent most of the time checking the horse's reins and reminding him that I had a wife and children at home waiting for me. On the way out on the trail it wasn't so bad. For the most part the horses canter which is fairly safe. But as soon as we turned around and headed for the stable, the fun started. Probably it was the oats waiting for them, or a warm stall. The horses were in an awful hurry, and it took considerable persuasion to slow them up. Tonight the flesh is tired, but the spirit is strong. I shall go again. Next Saturday there are horse races at the local racetrack, and I shall try to get some pictures. If the sun is good, I shall get snaps that you would swear is a movie set of 1870. Much love, Herb |
