Critical Background:
Some common Chinese simplified chracters are produced by simply leaving out part. Unlike simplified radicals, which occur in smplified form wherever they occur, these simplifications are one-time occurances.
Other simplifications make ad-hoc substitutions, often using a simple character of similar sound to replace many of the strokes of a complex character. Again, these are done on an ad-hoc basis, and no character sets a precedent for any other. Some simplifications merge two or more traditional characters into a single simplified one, occasionally despite the traditional characters having slightly different pronunciation. Finally, in a few cases old characters have been completely discarded in favor of the officialization of completely new characters. In fact, few of these are completely new in all regions; most are actually regional characters that were officialized because they are simpler than the better known ones. This quiz includes examples of all these types. (For whole-character substitutions, you can only make a blind guess, obviously.) |
