Filial Exemplar #7. Tán zǐ 郯子:
He Fed His Parents Doe’s Milk
(Lù Rǔ Fèng Qīn 鹿乳奉亲)

In the Zhōu dynasty (period 04) lived a man named TÁN whose nature was very filial. His parents were old, and both suffered from a malady of the eyes. Tán sought the very best doctors he could find, despite his poverty. But the doctor told him that the only cure was a diet of doe’s milk.

Unfortunately, deer are very timid animals, and doe’s milk was not easy to obtain. Tán therefore disguised himself in a deerskin and went to a herd of deer deep in the mountains to obtain doe’s milk to give his parents. Gradually he became more and more adept at moving among the deer in his costume, and milking them to provide for his parents.

Some hunters saw him one day and were about to shoot him, when Tán revealed himself to them to avoid being shot. The hunters were impressed with him and gave him some rabbits they had shot. And through the hunters his great loyalty to his parents became known in the world and is admired even today.
