| 1. | In the eighth year the king’s younger brother, Chéngjiǎo 成蟜, lord of Cháng’ān 长安, led troops against Zhào 赵. He rebelled but died at Túnliú 屯留. All his officers were executed and his people were transferred to Líntáo 临洮. The commander committed suicide. The corpses of all the soldiers who had mutinied were mutilated. | 2. | Lào Aǐ 嫪毐, enfeoffed marquis 侯 of Chángxìn 长信, was ordered to live in the region of Shānyáng 山阳. Lào Aǐ had his own palace, equipage, livery, forest and hunting ground. All affairs of state, great and small, were in his hands. The province of Tàiyuán 太原 west of the Yellow River was also his fief. | 嫪毐封为长信侯。 予之山阳地，令毐居之。 宫室车马衣服苑囿驰猎恣毐。 事无小大皆决于毐。 又以河西太原郡更为毐国。 Lào Aǐ fēng wéi Chángxìn hóu. Yú zhī shānyáng dì, lìng Aǐ jū zhī. | 3. | In the ninth year a comet was seen to cross the whole sky. Qín 秦 attacked Wèiyuán 魏垣 and Púyáng 蒲阳. In the fourth month the king took up residence at Yōng 雍. | 4. | The plot of Lào Aǐ 嫪毐, marquis of Chángxìn 长信, was discovered. He used the royal seal and queen-dowager’s seal to call out the royal troops, guards, government cavalry, foreign chiefs and his retainers, meaning to start a revolt by attacking Qínián 蕲年 Palace. | 长信侯毐作乱而觉，矫王御玺及太后玺以发县卒及卫卒、官骑、戎翟君公、舍人，将欲攻蕲年宫为乱。 Chángxìn hóu Aǐ zuòluàn ér jué, jiǎo wáng yùxǐ jí tàihòu xǐ yǐ fā xiàn zú jí wèi zú、guān qí、róng dí jūn gōng、shè rén, jiāng yù gōng Qínián gōng wéi luàn. 長信侯毐作亂而覺，矯王御璽及太后璽以發縣卒及衛卒、官騎、戎翟君公、舍人，將欲攻蘄年宮為亂。 |
| 5. | The king, learning of this, ordered the state councillor, the lord of Chāngpíng 昌平, and the lord of Chāngwén 昌文 to raise troops to subdue Lào Aǐ. At the Battle of Xiányáng 咸阳 several hundred rebels were killed. | 王知之，令相国昌平君、昌文君发卒攻毐。 战咸阳，斩首数百， Wáng zhī zhī, lìng xiàngguó Chāngpíng jūn、Chāngwén jūn fā zú gōng Aǐ. | 6. | All the king’s men were promoted, the eunuchs who had taken part in the action being promoted one rank. Lào Aǐ and his defeated forces fled. A reward of a million cash was offered throughout the land for his capture alive, half a million for his dead body. Lào Aǐ and his men were all caught. | 皆拜爵，及宦者皆在战中，亦拜爵一级。 毐等败走。 即令国中: 有生得毐，赐钱百万；杀之，五十万。 尽得毐等。 Jiē bài Jué, jí huàn zhě jiē zài zhàn zhōng, yì bàijué yījí. Aǐ děng bàizǒu. | 7. | Some twenty of his followers, including Jiè 竭 the captain of the palace guard, Sì 肆 the metropolitan prefect, Jiè 竭 the assistant archery officer, and Qí 齐 the chief palace steward, were dismembered and their heads hung high as a warning to others. Punishment was meted out even to his retainers, minor offenders being punished with conscript labour or deprivation of, rank. | 8. | The fourth month was bitterly cold and men froze to death. Yáng Duānhé 杨端和 attacked Yǎnshì 衍氏.
