Abstract

This is a cleaned up version of my keynote speech at the annual meeting of the Network of European Peace Scientists. It argues that, contrary to assertions frequently made by its defenders, formal modeling in the social sciences is not rigorous. However, contrary to its detractors, it is greatly useful for constructing arguments, communicating ideas, and moving from abstract concepts to specific instances.
