An international workshop to be held at UCSD on May 14-15, 2010, on risk assessment paradigms and uncertainty in policy research. Bringing together experts from multiple fields, we will address some of the following questions:

  • To what extent can risk assessment be standardized?
  • To what extent are the abstract rules of rational decision making useful for each paradigm?
  • To what extent are the abstract rules of policy making apply differently to different paradigms?
  • Under what conditions can a paradigm developed in one risk domain be applied in others?
  • To what extent can risk assessment be separated from risk management and risk communication and does that depend on the analytic paradigm?
  • To what extent do analytic strategies of risk assessment depend on national institutions and culture?
  • What are the main sources of uncertainty in each risk assessment paradigm?
  • How does each paradigm treat uncertainty?
