| His Infernal Majesty Dū Shì reigns at the bottom of the great Ocean, |
都市王掌管大海之底，

| due east below the Wòjiāo rock, in a vast noisy Court |
正西方沃燋石下的大热脑大地狱。

| eight thousand miles in extent, |

| Those who enter these dungeons are people who have committed the following sins: |

| 1. Those who are unfilial, |
不知孝道：
Bùzhī xiàodào: 不知孝道： |
| who do not nourish their relatives while alive or bury them when dead, |
双亲在时不能奉养；双亲去世后，不能予以安葬，
shuāngqīn zài shí bùnéng fèngyǎng; shuāngqīn qùshì hòu, bùnéng yǔyǐ ānzàng, 雙親在時不能奉養；雙親去世後，不能予以安葬， |
| who subject their parents and old people to fright, sorrow, or anxiety |
致令父母，翁姑惊恐、害怕、愁闷、烦恼。
zhì lìng fùmǔ, wēnggū jīngkǒng, hàipà, chóumèn, fánnǎo. 致令父母，翁姑驚恐、害怕、愁悶、煩惱。 |
| —if they do not quickly repent of their former sins, but continue to be foolish |
假若不快忏悔前非，糊涂的过日一久，
jiǎruò bùkuài chànhuǐ qiánfēi, hútu de guò rì yī jiǔ, 假若不快懺悔前非，糊塗的過日一久， |
| the hearth god will report their misdoings to the Jade Emperor, |
灶神先将这些男女，记下名字，上奉玉帝，
zàoshén xiān jiāng zhè xiē nánnǚ, jìxià míngzì, shàng fèng Yùdì, 竈神先將這些男女，記下名字，上奉玉帝， |
| and gradually deprive them of what prosperity they may be enjoying. |
减少或除去衣食的福报与禄位。
jiǎnshǎo huò chúqù yīshí de fú bào yǔ lùwèi. 減少或除去衣食的福報與祿位。 |
| 2. Those who indulge in magic and sorcery will, |
并听任邪鬼随身作崇。
Bìng tīngrèn xiéguǐ suíshēn zuò chóng. 並聽任邪鬼隨身作崇。 |
| after death, when they have been tortured in the other Courts, be brought here to this Court, |
死后受过前面各殿地狱的诸种刑罚后，解送到本殿。
sǐhòu shòu guò qiánmian gè diàn dìyù de zhū zhǒng xíngfá hòu, jièsòng dào běn diàn. 死後受過前面各殿地獄的諸種刑罰後，解送到本殿。 |
| and dragged backwards by the demons Bull Head and Horse Face to be thrust into the great hell, and then sent again to the various dungeons for added punishments. |
牛头、马面各鬼卒倒拖此等鬼犯，掷入大地狱去受苦，再交各小地狱分别加刑。
niútóu, mǎmiàn gè guǐzú dǎo tuō cǐděng guǐ fàn, zhì rù dàdì yù qù shòukǔ, zài jiāo gè xiǎo dìyù fēnbié jiā xíng. 牛頭、馬面各鬼卒倒拖此等鬼犯，擲入大地獄去受苦，再交各小地獄分別加刑。 |
| Then they will be passed on department for turning back thieves in the Tenth Court, where, at the turn of a kalpa, they will, |
受尽痛苦后解交第十殿的转劫所内，
Shòujìn tòngkǔ hòu jiějiāo dì shí diàn de zhuǎn jié suǒ nèi, 受盡痛苦後解交第十殿的轉劫所內， |
| with changed heads and faces, forever be reincranated as beasts. |
改头换面，永远投胎为畜生。
gǎitóu huànmiàn, yǒngyuǎn tóutāi wéi chùshēng. 改頭換面，永遠投胎爲畜生。 |
| But if pious people still in the human world believe what is said in the Jade Guidebook, |
假如有世间的善男信女，遵信玉历宝钞中之所述。
Jiǎrú yǒu shìjiān de shànnán xìnnǚ, zūnxìn yù lì bǎochāo zhōng zhī suǒ shù. 假如有世間的善男信女，遵信玉曆寶鈔中之所述。 |
| and on the 1st of the 4th moon make a vow to repent and sin no more, |
并即忏悔前非，于四月初一日，发誓改过，不再犯错。
bìng jí chànhuǐ qiánfēi, yú sì yuè chū yī rì, fāshì gǎiguò, bùzài fàncuò. 並即懺悔前非，於四月初一日，發誓改過，不再犯錯。 |
| and moreover on any day, night or morning, vow to the Hearth God |
并且无论何月何日；无论早上、晚上，如对灶神立誓：
bìngqiě wúlùn hé yuè hé rì; wúlùn zǎoshang, wǎnshang, rú duì zào shén lìshì: 並且無論何月何日；無論早上、晚上，如對竈神立誓： |
| "From today on, know that I shall correct my mistakes." |
“从今以后，知道改过。”
"Cóngjīn yǐhòu, zhīdào gǎiguò." “從今以後，知道改過。” |
| And if they no longer commit sins no matter what, |
无论何时均能坚持不再犯错。
Wúlùn hé shí jūn néng jiānchí bùzài fàncuò. 無論何時均能堅持不再犯錯。 |
| then when death nears, their Hearth God shall write on their heads one of three characters: |
若能如此，是在临死之时，本宅的灶神，将其分作三等处理：
ruò néng rúcǐ, shì zài línsǐ zhī shí, běn zhái de Zàoshén, jiāng qí fēn zuò sānděng chǔlǐ: 若能如此，是在臨死之時，本宅的竈神，將其分作三等處理： |
| On some he will write "obedient" (zūn 遵), on some "acquiescent"(shùn 顺), on some "repentant" (gǎi 改). |
有的在额上写一“遵”字；有的写一“顺”字，有的写一“改”字。
yǒude zài é shàng xiě yī "zūn" zì; yǒude xiě yī "shùn" zì, yǒude xiě yī "gǎi" zì. 有的在額上寫一“遵”字；有的寫一“順”字，有的寫一“改”字。 |
| and when the demon soldiers take them to the first court |
交勾使于鬼卒，带到第一殿；
jiāo gōu shǐ yú guǐzú, dài dào dìyī diàn; 交勾使於鬼卒，帶到第一殿； |
| and to each one through to the seventh |
并依次带到第七殿，
bìng yīcì dài dào dì qī diàn, 並依次帶到第七殿， |
| for any penalty associated with a given court |
即使有犯各殿诸罪，
jíshǐ yǒu fàn gè diàn zhū zuì, 即使有犯各殿諸罪， |
| they shall suffer only one half the punishment. |
也都减去一半的刑罚。
yě dōu jiǎnqù yībàn de xíngfá. 也都減去一半的刑罰。 |
| and moreover they shall escape this Eighth Court altogether, |
并且不用解送本殿来受苦，
bìngqiě bùyòng jièsòng běn diàn lái shòukǔ, 並且不用解送本殿來受苦， |
| being passed on to the Ninth Court, |
立即交地九殿．
lìjí jiāo dì jiǔ diàn. 立即交地九殿． |
| where cases of arson and poisoning are investigated, |
如果经查未犯放火等阴毒的罪事的话，
rúguǒ jīng chá wèi fàn fànghuǒ děng yīndú de zuì shì dehuà, 如果經查未犯放火等陰毒的罪事的話， |
| and finally born again from the Tenth Court among mankind as before. |
随即交给第十殿，分别发放投生人道。
suíjí jiāogěi dì shí diàn, fēnbié fāfàng tóushēng réndào. 隨即交給第十殿，分別發放投生人道。 |
| To this the Jade Emperor added as an extra boon: |
玉帝特加恩指示说：
Yùdì tè jiā ēn zhǐshì shuō: 玉帝特加恩指示說： |
| "Whosoever may copy, print,and circulate the Jade Guidebook to caution the world at large |
“假若再能传钞、印行玉历宝钞，使世间的男男女女等，知所警惕的话，
"jiǎruò zài néng chuán chāo, yìnxíng yù lì bǎochāo, shǐ shìjiān de nánnán nǚnǚ děng, zhī suǒ jǐngtì dehuà, “假若再能傳鈔、印行玉曆寶鈔，使世間的男男女女等，知所警惕的話， |
| shall escape all punishment from the First to the Eighth Court, inclusive. |
从第一殿到第八殿，各种苦刑，都可以避免，
cóng dìyī diàn dào dìbā diàn, gè zhǒng kǔxíng, dōu kěyǐ bìmiǎn, 從第一殿到第八殿，各種苦刑，都可以避免， |
| And passing through the ninth court, if none of this courts sins are detected, |
九殿再查，假如也没有犯本殿之过错，
Jiǔ diàn zài chá, jiǎrú yě méiyǒu fàn běn diàn zhī guòcuò, 九殿再查，假如也沒有犯本殿之過錯， |
| they shall pass on to the tenth court |
立即交给第十殿，
lìjí jiāogěi dì shí diàn, 立即交給第十殿， |
| to be reborn in a happy state as humans." |
发往投胎到有福气的地方，投生为人。”
