Report on the Sixth Annual Social Science Research Conference, entitled:

Credit, Trust and Calculation

The conference on Credit, Trust and Calculation took place on November 15-16, 2002 on the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) campus. It brought together scholars from economics, sociology, history and cognitive science. Eighteen presentations were arranged in six panels. Each panel had a designated discussant. Altogether there were 24 participants, including five from UCSD and three from overseas.

The main purpose of the conference was to initiate an interdisciplinary dialogue on credit. The conference was successful in bringing together some of the best academic experts on the topic from the various disciplines and generating lively discussion. It was less successful in enticing representatives of the credit industry to participate and in the end only one attended. The papers can be downloaded from the conference web site

The conference was also successful as a prelude to the larger international project on credit card markets: the Rational Calculation and Trust Project. Three conference participants: Tamara Perkins, Alya Guseva and Ivan Major, are members of the research team, in addition to conference participant and organizer Akos Rona-Tas, who is the Project Director.
