In the summer of 2012 I started an Assistant Professor position in the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego. In June 2012 I completed my PhD at UC Berkeley's School of Information. My research focuses on youth cultures, digital media practices, and the ways social privileges are made and remade today. For my dissertation I produced an ethnography on the first class of students to attend a new public middle school in New York City that promotes "game-like learning" and being a "maker" of media and technology. At Berkeley I was advised by Paul Duguid and Jenna Burrell. I have also been a member of the MacArthur Foundation's initiative on Digital Media and Learning since 2005. Most recently, I was a researcher for the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub where I worked under Mimi Ito. Before that, I was an ethnographer for The Digital Youth Project, and in 2009 I was a co-author of our final report, Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out: Kids Living and Learning with New Media. The full report is available for free here and is also available as a book from MIT Press. I received a masters degree from UC Berkeley's School of Information in 2007 and a BA from Bowdoin College in 2000.
